About the event

“ We all have one book in us !” The popular claim may be a generalisation too far, but we can be certain that the majority of people have something they want to express better, or a question that they want to ask aloud and answer on the page.

In today’s digital world, infinitely increased access to audiences and the diversity of ways of addressing them makes our ability to write and communicate so much greater. But it is still, for most of us, a real struggle to get started.

We invite everyone in Speen who has ever written or thought of writing to join us in discussion. Using the collective wisdom of the village, we would like to explore the barriers to self-expression in words and provide some suggestions about how to get started. It doesn't matter if you want to write novels or memoirs, poetry or plays, magazine articles or blogs, non-fiction or bodice rippers, this session is about tapping the creative DNA that all of us have inherited. Amongst the shared experiences we shall have a 16-year old writer who shares their experiences globally on Discord, and a section on podcasting and sharing stories in voice media as well.

Anne and David will lead the session. Anne trained as a librarian but became a successful publisher of information for lawyers. Today, as a psychotherapist, she writes for journals and scholarly periodicals. David started writing history textbooks in the 1970s, has just celebrated 10 years as a blogger and recently published a childhood memoir of growing up on a Cotswold farm, “ Facing Up To Father “, now in paperback. He will talk a little about the experience of writing this and getting it published, illustrated with a short reading - so please bring your critical faculties to the table - the next book could always be better! David’s book will be on sale at the event, all profits to the Festival charities.
