About the event

Luxecycling: Painting & Decoupage

Do you have a piece of furniture or a decorative household item in need of some love? Come to Speen Festival's Luxecycling event and learn how to transform your item into a beautiful, treasured and long lasting piece for your home. Plus, we'll be doing our bit to reduce waste, getting creative and having fun. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

Local wallpaper and fabric designer Jessica Jordan (wildlone.com) will show you different upcycling techniques using chalk paint and decoupage (with wallpaper, wrapping paper and other decorative papers).

To get as much out of the session as possible, we recommend you bring along a small to medium sized item, e.g.: mirror, box, toy chest, jewellery box, tray, mirror, small bedside table or coffee table. If you don't have anything appropriate at home, we recommend High Heavens (in support of South Bucks Hospice at the High Wycombe Household Recycling Centre - on a good day this place is a treasure trove!), Big Ben's Car Boot Sale (West Wycombe and Bledlow Ridge), charity shops and Facebook Marketplace.

There will be materials available on the day. However, to help supplies go as far as possible, it would be great if you could bring along any of the following you have unused or leftover from home projects:

  • Wallpaper, wrapping paper, vintage or retro books, dictionaries/encyclopedias, music sheets and any other decorative paper you find interesting
  • Wall or other interior paint (we can add chalk powder!)
  • Any unused chalk or other furniture paint, e.g. Annie Sloane, Rustoleum or Autentico
  • Paint brushes - a mixture of sizes
  • Sandpaper, various grades
  • Steel wool or wire brushes
  • Leftover wood stain or polish
  • Decorators varnish, sealant or wax
  • PVC glue
  • Wood filler or Polyfilla
  • Jars and plastic containers
  • Old rags

Thanks to Louise Brooks-Usher for the shoutout on the Speen Sales & Wants WhatsApp group. If anyone has any other ideas of where to source donated materials please leave a comment!

Watch this space for a video where Jess talks about Luxecycling, what you can expect from the session and where to find great furniture or household items to bring along. We'll also be sharing some example videos of sanding and chalk painting, as well as helpful links and guides to give you an introduction in the leadup to the event. In the meantime, take a look at Jess's Pinterest board - https://www.pinterest.co.uk/wildlone/upcycling/ - for inspiration!
