Speen Festival News
August 2009

Hello everyone
With just a month to go before Speen Festival 2009 explodes into action, now's the time to book your tickets for our dazzling line-up of entertainment. With tickets ranging from just £1 - £9, Speen Festival offers great fun, value for money entertainment for everyone. So, if you're looking to...

Sit back and enjoy...
...where better place to start than with HONK! our musical theatre from 10-12 September? This is the story of 'The Ugly Duckling' turned into a witty, truly exuberant celebration of music, singing and dancing. Expect to be charmed, beguiled and bewitched. But be quick, tickets are selling fast. If you'd prefer to sit back and be soothed with some heavenly classical music and poetry, why not join us on Monday 14 September in Speen Chapel for Heavens and Earth and In Between?

Indulge in some serious fun...
For some seriously tasty fun our Festival of Food on Sunday 13 is just perfect at just £2 per adult, (kids go free). Here, you will have plenty of opportunity to sample, sip (and buy) the very best from the Chilterns from chutneys, pickles and jams, cheeses, barbecued sausages and fresh pies, sparkling lemonade and juices, strawberry marshmallow kebabs, fruit cakes and delicious handmade chocolates not to mention an array of beer, wine and champagne. With plenty of fresh food for lunch and even some foody competitions for kids, this will be a great family day out! Looking for more outdoor fun? Then we've got Wildlife Fun for Families on Tuesday 15, an after-school, up-close and personal exploration of Speen's wildlife or if you're really looking to do something truly life-enhancing, then why not come along to Speen Big Sing! a wild and whacky community singing experience. For an equally wild and possibly even wet experience, we've got two events for kids on Saturday 19 September. The first is Snow Dreams, a captivating winter wonderland show by children's theatre company, Teatro Unfortunato, so expect lots of silliness and plenty of snow. To round off a perfect Saturday for children, sign up to Speen Bike Park Challenge, an afternoon of biking challenges on a variety of exciting courses for 7-18 year olds. Limited places only.

Be inspired and learn something new...
First off, from 10-20 September why not visit Speen Chapel's exhibition of local writing that has been inspired by some of our writing and poetry workshops? On Sat 13/Sun 14, we've also got a stunning Photographic Exhibition/ Competition featuring the work of talented Chiltern photographers (where you can also enter your own photos in the competition). On Sunday 14, why not join us on a epic journey of wide-eyed discovery with Cosmic Quest: A History of Astronomy, a fascinating insight into the science that mapped our universe. Expect to be blown away with this awesome presentation. For something a little closer to home, on Tuesday 15 we've got a stunning photographic presentation called Wild about Speen featuring the work of local expert, Peter Symonds. But if you're really looking to turn up the heat and indulge in serious intellectual debate, Science Matters on Thursday 17 provides you with a unique opportunity to put your questions to a panel of leading scientists and thinkers in Speen's own Question Time style event. So if you have any burning questions, be it on climate change, the environment, energy etc, just email director@speenfestival.org.

Best wishes
